For a prayer app, being on time is the whole promise. Users rely on it for fajr in the dark and for maghrib at a specific minute. That depends on correct calculations, the right location and notifications that actually arrive when the phone is asleep.

Theme29 builds prayer time and Qibla apps for iOS and Android in Flutter. Zabi, our Islamic companion app, includes customisable, location-based prayer times, a Qibla finder, a nearby mosque locator and a Ramadan schedule with Iftar and Suhoor times.

How prayer times are calculated

Prayer times come from the sun's position for a given place and date. Communities agree on most of this but differ on a few conventions, so a good app lets users choose.

Calculation methods

Common methods include the Muslim World League, ISNA, the Egyptian General Authority of Survey, Umm al-Qura and the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi. They differ mainly in the angles used for Fajr and Isha.

Asr and juristic choice

Asr begins earlier or later depending on the school of thought followed (the standard or Hanafi convention). The app should offer both, with a clear label.

High latitudes and adjustments

Far from the equator, twilight may not fully end in summer. Recognised fallback rules exist and users can also apply manual minute adjustments.

Local timetables come first

Many mosques publish their own timetable. Letting a mosque or region override calculated times keeps the app consistent with the community. The person or committee responsible decides which source is authoritative.

Location, notifications and Qibla, done reliably

Location and time zones

Automatic location with a manual city fallback for privacy, correct time zone and daylight saving handling, and support for travellers.

Adhan and reminder notifications

Notifications and adhan audio need careful platform-specific work. For example, iOS limits how many local notifications an app can schedule at once, so the app must reschedule continuously.

Qibla finder

Direction is computed from the user's location to the Kaaba, then shown with the phone's compass. Sensor calibration prompts and a fallback map view help where the compass is unreliable.

Mosques, Ramadan and the Hijri calendar

A nearby mosque locator (Zabi searches a 1 to 5 km radius), Iftar and Suhoor times for Ramadan, and a Hijri calendar with an adjustment option for local moon sighting.

Frequently asked questions

Which calculation method should a prayer time app use?

There is no single answer, because communities follow different methods. A good app defaults to the method most common in the user's region and lets them change it, along with the Asr convention and manual adjustments.

Why do prayer times sometimes differ between apps and mosques?

Different calculation methods, angle conventions and rounding, or a mosque publishing its own fixed timetable. The mosque's own timetable is authoritative for that community, so our apps can display it.

Will the adhan play when the phone is locked?

It can, but the behaviour depends on the operating system and settings, especially battery optimisation on some Android devices. We build and test for this, and add guidance for users.

How accurate is the Qibla compass?

Accuracy depends on the phone's sensors and calibration. We add a calibration prompt and a map-based view as a fallback so users can verify the direction.

Can you add prayer times to an app I already have?
